Long before we had children I read an article describing how much raising a child in the US costs. I don't remember the number, but it was astronomical. I immediately took that as a challenge: we will raise our children for a lot less than that article predicted! Perhaps I'll write a "raising a child on a budget" post sometime, but for now, I'll just share about one of our biggest money savers: cloth diapers.
Cloth diapering is one of those things that seems overwhelming and difficult, but, once you begin, it really isn't a big deal at all. From what I've heard, it was a much more challenging and time-consuming proposition 25 years ago, but cloth diapers have come a long way! Pins and complicated folds are a thing of the past. And, for those of you who are disgusted by the idea of rinsing poo out of the cloth diapers, read the fine print on those disposables you use; you're supposed to rinse the poo out of them, too!
We've honestly had a great cloth diapering experience (the $1500/year that we're not spending on disposable diapers is pretty nice, too!), but a couple of months ago we started having a really hard time keeping A dry overnight. We tried everything including switching to disposables at night, but everything leaked. Then, one fine day, I noticed an advertisement on Facebook for a cloth diaper bundle from Nora's Nursery. They came with bamboo inserts rather than the microfiber we'd been using, so we decided to try them out.
As it turns out, this was a great decision for a number of reasons. Nora's Nursery is a family-run business whose goal is to make cloth diapering accessible and affordable for all without compromising on quality. The Nora's Nursery family makes all their products with their own children in mind, and they are doing an awesome job of meeting their goal! Their diapers come with a great warranty, and, if you have any questions about their products, you can contact them directly from their site and receive a friendly and timely response.
And for the diapers themselves? YOU. GUYS. These diapers are by far the best diapers we've ever used. Night time leaks? Not one! NOT ONE LEAK!! They're cute, high quality, and super affordable. We were happy with our cloth diapers before, but we did have leaks, especially overnight or on long car rides, from every other brand we've ever used, and we've used some really well-known brands of cloth diapers. Yes, we had a few "China cheapies," but we also had Charlie Banana, Fuzzibunz, and a few others, and they all leaked from time to time.
We have never had a leak with our Nora's Nursery diapers. We've been using our new diapers for about three months, and they have only become more absorbent with each wash. They are lined with a soft suede/TPU material that is comfy for baby, doesn't pill with use, and doesn't stain. Truly! They're still as brightly white as they were the day they were delivered to my doorstep! We will never buy another brand of cloth diapers, and I'm planning to phase out my other diapers and replace them all with Nora's, especially since Baby #2 is due to make his or her appearance in the next couple of weeks.
The best part is that you don't have to take my word for it! Nora's Nursery is offering As Told By Amy readers a 20% off coupon valid for anything on their website if you use the code astoldbyamy at checkout! So, if you're in need of a few more diapers for your stash, or if you want to buy some cute monthly stickers or even nursery art head over to Nora's Nursery and take advantage of the discount!
